What is required to become a driving instructor?

How much does Pimlico Driving School charge to become a driving instructor?
Charges vary depending on the individual training needs of each candidate. A personalised lesson plan and pricing will be provided following an initial assessment.

No driving school can guarantee that you will pass and any that claims to should be treated with caution. However, at Pimlico Driving School, we are committed to giving you the highest chance of success by offering:

Can I use my own car for training?
Yes — you’re welcome to use your own car, provided it meets DVSA requirements, including:

Roadworthy condition with valid MOT, tax, and insurance

Fitted with dual controls (optional)

Suitable interior mirrors for the instructor and examiner

Clean and presentable, inside and out
Alternatively, we can supply a fully equipped training vehicle if you prefer.
How long does it take to become a qualified driving instructor?
The full process typically takes between 6 to 12 months, depending on your availability, how quickly you pass each of the three DVSA tests, and whether you choose to join the PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) scheme. At the moment DVSA wait time for each part is longer than usual.
What happens if I fail one of the tests?
You’re allowed up to three attempts at Part 2 and Part 3. If you don’t pass after three attempts, you’ll need to wait 2 years from your original Part 1 pass date before starting again. Part 1 has unlimited attempts.
Can I train around my current job or commitments?
Yes — our training is flexible. You can train part-time, during evenings or weekends, to fit around your schedule.
What is a PDI and how does it work?
A PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) is someone who has passed Parts 1 and 2 of the ADI tests and has completed at least 40 hours of Part 3 training. You can apply for a trainee licence that allows you to begin teaching real learners for pay while gaining experience before your final Part 3 test.
Pimlico Driving School will sponsor your PDI licence, provide pupils, and give continued support while you gain valuable real-world teaching experience.

DVSA Qualification Breakdown
Part 1: Theory & Hazard Perception

100 multiple-choice questions (90 mins)

Minimum score: 85/100 overall & 20/25 in each category

Hazard Perception: 14 video clips, pass mark 57/75
Part 2: Driving Ability Test

Duration: 1 hour

Includes eyesight check, vehicle safety, general driving, manoeuvres, independent driving

Pass: No more than 6 minors, no serious faults
Part 3: Instructional Ability Test

Deliver a 40-minute lesson with a real pupil

If successful, you can apply for your first ADI badge within 12 months of passing. If you don’t pass, you may retake the test — as long as it’s within 2 years of passing your Part 1 and you are allowed up to 3 attempts.
